I have managed to pick up a pair of rear arch repairs off ebay that will help both on this car and on our other MK1... I was hoping to get some sills to but was outbid whilst not paying attention...
I think that the rocker cover may finaly by sealed and it's just old oil on the manifold, however there's smoke from the exhuast that points to worn rings I guess...
I must get the other engine to the garage for inspection..

Water In, oil out...
Previously whilst looking over the car I found that a water rail had rusted out totaly and all the water had gone. This prevents any long term running of the engine.
I managed to remove this offending pile of ferrous yesterday, but did not have any suitable ~30mm Dia pipe to replace it.
Simple solution for the moment was a secion of 30mm plumming waste pipe. The car now holds water. Although a T-pice elsewhere looks like an iminent fail.
I also fitted a replacement rocker gasket but the car is still dropping oil onto the hot exhast and smoking badly.
There is definatly a nock from the engine so I guess it's definatly going to be swapped out for the spare unit.
I am bidding on some sills and arch repairs on ebay.
